Essen – situated in the heart of the Ruhr area – 6th biggest city of Gemany, a documented history of 1150 years, in the middle of the 19th century development into the largest site for coal and steel in Europe, now a modern metropolis for economy, trade and services. In the south you’ll find the woody hills of the Ruhr, in the north industrial monuments of historical importance. The token of the Ruhr area, coalmine Zeche Zollverein, has been appointed by UNESCO together with its surrounding area of the coking plant among the world’s cultural heritage.
